Loanhead Miners Research Takes Action

The Loanhead Miners’ Action Research project is taking action this week.  A questionnaire has been devised by the Researchers asking about people’s knowledge of the Social Club and Community Centre; the Researchers have already collected a number of responses already and are keen to gather as many as possible.

The questionnaires will be completed in a number of formats.  Copies are in the library with a box for returning completed questionnaires, the questionnaire can be downloaded from the Loanhead Miners website, www.loanheadmw.org.uk on the News Page and some Researchers will be out and about on the streets of Loanhead and will ask you for a few minutes of your time to go through the questions with them face to face.

If you have a few spare minutes please do take the time to complete a questionnaire, this is about you, the future of Loanhead Miners and new and exciting community opportunities.  It is really important for the Researchers to gather as much input as possible to create and write a comprehensive report on the results and allow Loanhead Miners to plan most effectively for the future.

The Action Research project has been made possible by a grant from the Scottish Community Action Research Fund (SCARF), a Scottish Government programme and is managed by the Scottish Community Development Centre, to develop a unique ‘action research’ project that will investigate the community perception of Loanhead Miners.   The project, led by Loanhead Miners, involves partners, Midlothian Council and Jewel & Esk College.

Further information is available from Gail Prince, Development Officer on 0131 440 4322 or e-mail mail@loanheadmw.org.uk.

Congratulations to Antonio Garcia who won the Karaoke Competition in the grand finale on Friday 18th April.  The 5 finalists put on an excellent show, singing 3 songs each.  The panel of judges took their time to deliberate and announced the winner as Antonio Garcia, who is pictured here receiving his prize of £1,000 from Davie Howie, member of the Loanhead Miners Management Committee.

The competition is due to start again in the near future, so if you think you have what it takes to entertain a crowd like this

Thanks to a grant from the Scottish Community Foundation, Women’s Fund for Scotland an excellent International women’s Day event took place in the Community Centre and Croft Suite of Loanhead Miners on Friday 7th March.

Members of the community came along and enjoyed a variety of taster sessions including Head Massage, Mini Manicures, Healthy Eating and Pilates.  Also available was information from organisations working in and around Loanhead, including the Citizens Advice Bureau, Lothian and Borders Police and New Leaf.

Feedback received was very positive; we hope to arrange another event for next year so watch this space.

Research Project

Loanhead Miners’ Charitable Society has been awarded a grant of £10,000 from the Scottish Community Action Research Fund (SCARF), a Communities Scotland programme, to develop a unique ‘action research’ project that will investigate the community perception of Loanhead Miners.

The research will be undertaken by a group of local people with a view to getting them involved in the Club and engaged in community activity in the Club’s recently built Community Centre.

The Society are currently recruiting community investigators who are interested in getting involved in this exciting new project and wish to add a qualification to their CV, anyone who is interested can contact the Development Officer from the Contact Us page.

The research proposal, believed to be the first of its kind in Scotland, is being funded through the Scottish Communities Action Research Fund. The programme, led by Loanhead Miners, involves partners, Midlothian Council and Jewel & Esk Valley College.

The project will recruit a dozen local volunteers and support them through a 12 week SVQ accredited course, ‘Local Investigations’.

The researchers will carry out the research whilst learning at the same time, with a start date of Monday 31st March 2008.  Researchers will benefit from tutor support and other student benefits available through Jewel and Esk Valley College.  The researchers will be paid a fee to do the actual research and will produce a report on their findings which Loanhead Miners will as a basis for future planning.
